Subcontract Fast-Hole Spark Drilling | Sheffield

Stress-Free Non-Contact Eroding

AA Tools & Engineering Group Ltd offers premium, micro-tolerance fast-hole spark drilling and electrical discharge machining (EDM) services from our Sheffield facility. Operating our advanced Anotronic River 35HR1+ Small Hole EDM Drilling Machine, we provide local machine shops, toolmakers, and Tier 1 manufacturers with high-speed, burr-free spark erosion.

Equipped with the high-performance HP1+ high-speed circuit module it specialises in drilling precision start-holes, coolant passages, and gas vents through fully hardened materials where conventional tooling fails.

Anotronic River 35HR1+

Computer-controlled fast-hole spark driller is engineered for rapid penetration rates, outstanding positional accuracy, and processing tough metals without inducing mechanical tool stress:

  • Ultra-precise hole popping from 0.1mm up to 3.0mm in diameter (ø) utilising synchronised rotating brass or copper tube electrodes.

  • Accommodates component parts up to 350mm x 250mm travel with a maximum workpiece table mass of 250 kg.

  • Integrated high-pressure dielectric flushing clears micro-spheres instantly from deep cavities, preventing localised heat build-up and ensuring consistent wall parallelism.

  • zero component distortion, zero micro-cracking, and zero burring—even on ultra-thin walls or curved profiles.

Primary Applications for Fast-Hole Spark Drilling

Our Sheffield-based subcontract cell provides fast-turnaround support for specialised engineering requirements:

  • Wire EDM Starter Holes

Rapidly pierce hardened tool steel blocks (up to 65+ HRC) to create precise, straight pilot entries for high-tensile wire threading without the risk of drill breakage.

  • Emergency Broken Tap & Drill Extraction

Don't scrap expensive machined components. We use non-contact spark erosion to disintegrate broken taps, drills, and seized studs cleanly out of threads without distorting your original component geometry.

  • Gas Vent Holes

Uses electrical sparks to drill complex cooling holes and fine air vents into tough aerospace metals and engine blades.

  • Tooling Coolant Passages & Ejector Openings

Eroding internal fluid channels into solid carbide specials, plastic injection venting slots, and hardened punch inserts.

Hardened Materials Handled Easily

Because our spark drilling process uses thermal energy rather than physical force, structural hardness is irrelevant:

  • Fully Hardened Tool Steels: O1, D2, HSS, M2, M42, and powder metallurgy ASP grades after final heat treatment.

  • Exotic & Work-Hardening Alloys: Inconel, Titanium, Monel, Hastelloy, and Super Duplex steels.

  • Industrial Tungsten Carbide: Micro-grain carbides and wear-resistant coatings up to 1,500+ HV.
